If it’s your second child, you can tackle fun siblings pictures as it is safe if your elder one can hold the younger one.

Along with considering the right age, you must be mindful of location!  So without any further ado, here are a few ideas to make the frame better with the ideal location.

Start with…

Overhead pictures

Spread a blanket on the floor or over where there’s ample natural light. When choosing blanket colors and designs, always prefer; pastels or patterns like stars, rainbows, or sompe polka dots. Make sure the light falls on the top of the baby’s head, change poses, and there you go with perfect overhead pics!

Tucked in comfort

These pictures always make you feel like you keep looking at that innocence, big eyes, and pinky lips. Tuck the blanket under thor chin and let the light falling from the window do the magic.

On the cradle

A cradle or crib is the insignia of a baby photoshoot, so never forget to make innovative shots with a cradle. Take it from different angles, experiment with every corner, and take a few shots through the crib slats. Also, taking a shot where one parent is leaning over the crib, hand on the baby, or trying to grab the baby is the most, do click such emotional shots.

Of course, you see that coming; how could you not? 

This just in: without light, a photograph can’t exist. Light is an essential ingredient in the making of an ideal photograph.

Over and above, the word photography actually means “Drawing with light.” No wonder some even say that photography is more about writing, painting, and telling stories using light. It is everywhere, indoors or outdoors, and that’s why videography, cinematography, or whichever nook photography embraces exists; photography is all about light. Well, not stretching it anymore with the worldly statements; let’s get straight to the point: how does it make a photograph? Why must one understand it before capturing a moment… And all that jazz!

The beauty of light

Light is energy that enables us to see, create, and… Most of all, convey meaning through art (photography)! From giving life (oxygen), we breathe through plant photosynthesis to putting life in photographs; light is a ubiquitous need! Isn’t it beautiful that we, “The living beings” (especially), stay alive in “Photographs” as well? Light is doing its magic and helps us seize moments we cherish. Light is everywhere, even in the darkest recesses of space. 

One must understand the fundamental properties of light and the most basic ways to capture it. Ask photographers how they struggle to get the right amount of it; how much it matters when it comes to capture moments. There are a few basic properties of light which are important for all photographers to remember while composing.

A pinch of history

The word photography was seemingly first coined in 1839 from the Greek words phos (genitive: phōtós), indicating “light” and graphê, meaning “drawing or painting.” The technology that ushered the invention of photography merges two distinct sciences: optics & chemistry. 

The concept of optical sciences is the convergence of light rays to form an image inside a camera. On the other hand, enabling the capture image to be cataloged permanently on a  photosensitive surface is what chemistry does! Interesting, isn’t it?

Moving forward…

Whether you turn on the flashlight, use a fluorescent bulb, or open the window blinds to let the sunlight in; there lies a vast difference between your light sources!

It turns out that there are some prominent differences between natural and artificial sources of light. Yes, that’s one reason lights are categorized chiefly into two types of sources;

  • Natural lighting 
  • Artificial lighting

Natural light refers to any light that comes from natural, non-technological sources; any glare from the sun or moon is natural light. Daylight/sunlight or nightlight qualifies as natural light, no matter how strong or weak, and apparently is beneficial as it costs us nothing!

Natural lighting is free, abundant, and easy to find; for novice photographers, it’s a boon. There’s no need to invest in lighting equipment to get good shots; you can easily experiment with natural light.

On the other hand, artificial light can often be moved around and adjusted to fit any situation in photography. Artificial sources produce this type of light like; a studio strobe, Speedlight, LED light, camera’s pop-up flash, streetlight, or even a lamp. It is more accessible than natural lighting, where you must move the subject and camera according to your desired lighting scheme.

Types of lights in photography

Talking about types of light and not introducing 3-point lighting; lame!

One must be mindful of this classic lighting technique (every professional photographer uses it), especially while shooting indoors (in studios). Be it filmmakers, videographers, and photographers, three-point lighting is the most common setup for all professionals.

As the name implies, three-point lighting entangles the usage of three light sources in three specific lighting positions. Using these three light sources, a professional can control all the variables for lighting a subject while shooting. Three-point lighting setup includes; key (front light), fill (soft light), and backlight.

Front Light

The front light occurs when the light source is directly in front of the subject. It is also known as flat light; since the light is not at any angle, it results in a limited number of shadows on the frame. The light will be dispersed evenly across the photograph, with no more or less exposed area than the rest. This type of light is used in portraits and helps to show the complete portrait; making both sides of the face appear more symmetrical. Front light can also be helpful while photographing products without distracting backgrounds and clear lines such as jewelry, products, and portraits.

Back light

As the name suggests, the backlight is produced when the light source is behind the subject, basically when the subject stands in between the light and the camera. You can use this light to showcase a product by creating a rim light effect around the object (living or nonliving) you shoot. This light allows you to play with the creative photographic techniques like silhouettes and long shadows in photography.

Soft Light

When the light source is diffused, it eventually yields soft light; the lighting effect always remains subtle with soft light. Using soft light, one can get less intense shadows and a lower contrast between the darks and light in the photograph, if there are any. When you shoot indoors, a diffusion panel between the light source and your subject is used to get the job done. Whereas, while shooting outdoors, you can get perfect shots when the weather is hazy; clouds act as natural diffusers for the direct sunlight. Also called diffused light, softlight offers a more fresh and natural appearance to the photograph when used adequately.

Hard Light

Unlike soft or diffused light, hard light is produced when your light source is pointed directly at the subject. This light is used chiefly while yielding high contrast and well-enhanced, and dark shadowed pictures. Hard light acts as a spotlight and focuses on more detailed subjects in the frame.

Here are the steps to create silhouettes:

  • Place your camera with manual settings on a stable surface or tripod.
  • Stand in front of a background that is brighter than you.
  • Make sure you stand in the way that highlights the outline of your face and upper body.

Don’t use the “Auto” settings on your camera since it will probably set the wrong shutter speed and aperture as it attempts to “fix” the silhouette effect.

Why are we so hyped about “composition” in photography? Composition has become the new standard of photography, and I believe no single photographer skips composition while creating 2D moments (photographs). We all own cameras today; if not professional, we still have our smartphones; what say? Even I started with a mobile camera, and I am glad how much “mobile photography” taught me. When I started, I wasn’t aware of the rules and photography standards; I was just clicking what captivated me just the way I wanted! I came across the word “composition” when my uncle talked on the phone and praised my photography! More specifically, he said, “the way you compose your photographs is amazing,” I wondered what composition is, right after the call ended. 

Really, I did! The very first thing I googled after that was “composition in photography.” How come I wasn’t aware of this until now, I have been clicking pictures from my own perspective. Well, that’s what composition does in photography! Reveals the photographer’s perspective and tells what to look at and what not to.

Composition in Art

The term “composition” involves not only pictorial arts but also music, dance, literature, and virtually any other kind of art in the universe. The composition plays an influential role in how our art is viewed and experienced by our audience.

Here’s a scenario:

If you’re a musician, you know that music composition is a thing here! Obviously, there’s a structure to a song that makes it stand. Each musician plays a part in creating music, i.e., a piece of art! Apparently, if a musician plays the wrong notes or plays it at the wrong time, the entire song becomes a mess. So in order to craft a piece (art), it required a handful of talent but a bucket full of composition, most importantly. The same goes for other art forms, painting, photography, dance, and literature!

We all are photographers until real photography begins… I meant composition begins!

Ansel Adams said it right… “You don’t take a photograph; you make it.”

Composition literally means ‘putting together,’ and when it comes to art, you put together all the elements to craft a piece of art! Composition is a visual structure of the image you intend to click! This is how the elements of a photograph are arranged entirely. A composition in photography can be made using many different elements. It is basically an arrangement of how the artist puts things within a frame to help a photograph become more attractive to the viewers. A good picture takes many different details and combines them into a whole to make it aesthetically pleasing. I can say composition is how an artist (photographer) tells a story through the periphery of a single frame.

Why does composition matter?

Composing an image or photograph means arranging elements within the frame to reflect your perspective’s essence or goal successfully. Arranging elements within a frame can be done by moving the objects or subjects. An excellent example could be portrait or still photography, where you can tell your subject to move in order to get the exact picture in your head. Yes, exactly, you make a picture in your head, later frame it in real, and then, “click!” This is how you make a photograph! 

However, street photography involves uncertainty since, being a photographer, you don’t choose to move the subjects yourself but wait for them to be in the most suitable position within the frame. Furthermore, you can simply change your position to arrange elements the way you want! 

Composition is a manner of guiding the observer’s eye towards the most important aspects of your art. A poor composition can ruin a photograph completely, no matter how interesting the subjects and objects are! Regardless, a good composition can make a masterpiece even with the most insipid objects and subjects.

So, how can you master composition?

No one is master by birth; we all learn through practice, experience, and, so important, “mistakes.” You might have made mistakes but learned double from those. Well, now is the time to master the essential component of photography, i.e., composition. Here are the general rules of composition you can follow to be on the path to better photography:

Rule of Thirds always serves!

When you begin photography, there is no better place to start than the rule of thirds, a classic composition technique of photography. There are chances you aren’t aware of the term, but I am pretty sure you’ve seen it. Yes, you have; your smartphone has a rule of thirds grid overlay that 3×3 grid with equal size rectangles; for what? Of course, to guide you through the basics of photography! Formed by four lines, the rule of thirds has two vertical and two horizontal lines placed at an equal distance from each other in order to divide the frame into thirds.

Leading Lines to define!

While clicking, you must take advantage of the structures and the lines of natural landscapes. Leading lines provide centered and symmetrical photography composition; to help the viewer focus on the subject or object, you have clicked. Leading lines in your image basically converge towards your subject, which adds symmetry and depth to a photograph. Railway tracks, street lines, sidewalks, roads, buildings, and paving stones are most often taken as leading lines, but there’s no limit; you can find them anywhere. All you need is an eye to visualize those invisible lines in your head! See the picture shown below.

Create Depth to show your best!

As photographs are always 2D (two-dimensional), it’s essential to add a feeling of depth to the composition, so it doesn’t seem flat. You cover the foreground, middle ground, and background in the frame when you shoot landscapes. When your subject is more focused, the image seems more realistic. Focus and DOF (depth of field) adds an illusion of 3D (third dimension within a photograph. Shallow depth of field can immediately give the onlooker a look of depth and scale, even in flat pictures. It’s a win!

Frame Within the Frame brings fame!

Framing in photography works the same way it works for a  beautiful work of art on your wall. Using a frame as an element within your composition focuses on the main subject of your photography and highlights it effectively. A frame could be tree branches, archways, window frames, or even human hands. Feel free to use the frames within your frame! Below here is  an example:

Symmetry & Pattern; always supernatural!

Symmetry: something that is precisely the same on both sides! Symmetry always gladdens the human eye no matter what the context is! Shots that fill the frame with repeating patterns (a queue of trees, a row of windows, or a row of multicolored tiles) are always impactful and visually engaging. And when it comes to photography, it can work flawlessly as long as you use it smartly.

These are the basic rules of composition; there are many other millennial ways you can contribute to good photographs. Emotions, Structures, Color contrast, Rule of odds, Rule of space, Shape and Negative space, try them all; It’s time to break the wall

Final thoughts

Being an artist means you are not bound to make art within limits, you break the rules, and you make your own rules! Remember that you are only supposed to break the rules if you have already learned the standard rules of composition in photography.
