Origin of Maha Kumbh: A Journey Through Time

The Maha Kumbh Mela is a grand intersection of spirituality and mythology. It is a practice that has been celebrated for thousands of years in India. Its origins are deeply rooted in ancient Hindu scriptures. To understand its deep meaning, you must explore the mythology and historical evolution.

The Mythology Behind Maha Kumbh

The Mythology Behind Maha Kumbh

The Maha Kumbh originates in the Samudra Manthan (the separation of the ocean), as narrated in Hindu scriptures like the Bhagavata Purana and Vishnu Purana. According to the Hindu Puranas, the gods (Devas) and demons (Asuras) joined forces to churn the ocean of milk to obtain Amrit, the nectar of immortality. Mount Mandara (the place near Baunsi, district banka in Bihar) was used as the churning rod. The devas and asuras tied great Vasuki to Mount Mandara to use him as a churning rope. Vasuki was the king of all serpents. He lived on Lord Shiva’s neck.

After much effort from Devas and Asuras, the Amrit finally came out. However, a dispute arose over who would drink it. Fearing that the Asuras might misuse Amrit’s power, Lord Vishnu intervened by taking the form of the beautiful Mohini goddess. Mohini represents Lord Vishnu’s Maya, the attractions and illusions of the material world. Mohini appeared to both Devas and Asuras, but it was the Asuras who lost their senses in front of Mohini and handed over the Amrit to her.

In the chaos that ensued, a few drops of Amrit spilled on four locations: Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain, and nashik. These places became sanctified, and the Maha Kumbh Mela began as a celebration of this celestial event. The Maha Kumbh festival is also linked to the belief that bathing in these sacred rivers during the Maha Kumbh can cleanse one’s sins and grant liberation (moksha).

He described a grand gathering of people along the spiritual river Ganga, performing rituals and seeking blessings.
